Aboriginal Family Preservation
Strong Families. Strong Culture. Strong Futures.
Burrun Dalai’s Aboriginal Family Preservation program provides culturally responsive support to strengthen Aboriginal families, keep children safe at home, and maintain strong connections to family, culture, community and Country.
Burrun Dalai’s Aboriginal Family Preservation program works alongside Aboriginal children, young people and families to help keep families strong, safe and together.
Through culturally informed, family-focused support, we work with families to build on their strengths, overcome challenges and create a safe and stable home environment where children can thrive while remaining connected to family, culture, community and Country.
Our Aboriginal Family Preservation services are available across Tamworth, Armidale, Kempsey and Taree.
Keeping Families Together
We believe Aboriginal children and young people thrive when they are safe, supported and connected to their families, culture and community.
Aboriginal Family Preservation provides practical and culturally responsive support to families experiencing challenges that may impact the safety and wellbeing of their children.
Our team works alongside each family, recognising their strengths and helping them develop the skills, confidence and support networks needed to create positive and lasting change.
How We Support Families
Every family is different, so support is tailored to the individual needs, circumstances and goals of the family.
The Aboriginal Family Preservation framework is built around seven key areas of support:
Engagement – building strong, respectful and trusting relationships with families.
Case Management – working together to identify needs, set goals and coordinate the right supports.
Family & Parent Support – strengthening parenting skills, family relationships and everyday family life.
Therapeutic Support – helping families access appropriate support to address challenges and improve wellbeing.
Child-Focused Support – keeping the safety, wellbeing and needs of children and young people at the centre of our work.
Healing – supporting culturally informed approaches to healing and strengthening family wellbeing.
Advocacy – helping families have their voices heard and supporting them when navigating services and systems.
Culture at the Centre
Culture, identity and connection are central to the wellbeing of Aboriginal children and families.
Our approach recognises the importance of strengthening connections to family, kin, community, culture and Country. We work in partnership with families and communities, respecting their knowledge, choices and right to have a strong voice in decisions affecting their lives.
Building on Family Strengths
Aboriginal Family Preservation is about working with families, not simply for them.
We recognise the strengths, knowledge and resilience already within families and communities. By working together, we aim to strengthen relationships, build parenting confidence, improve family wellbeing and help create safer and more stable environments for children and young people.
The goal is to support positive, sustainable change that helps Aboriginal children remain safely at home with their families wherever possible.
